The Council of Khalistan extends its sympathies to the people and government of Pakistan and the family of Benazir Bhutto on her assassination. It is a tragic event for her family, for Pakistan, and for the region. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto brings massive instability to Pakistan.
Bhutto was the head of Pakistan?s largest political party, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP.) Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for her assassination. They had publicly threatened to kill her recently and had reportedly been seeking to kill her since 1992. The Pakistani government says it has ?strong evidence? that Al Qaeda is responsible, according to the BBC. After the shooting of Bhutto, the shooter blew himself up in a suicide attack, killing 20 more people.
In Karachi, Bhutto’s hometown, riots broke out. Vehicles were set on fire. Riots also occurred elsewhere in Pakistan.
Those responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto must be identified and brought to justice as quickly as possible. Political assassinations are unacceptable and must be condemned the world over, no matter where they occur or who carries them out.
?I strongly condemn this assassination. It must not be allowed to derail Pakistan?s movement towards democracy,? said Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh, President of the Council of Khalistan, which leads the movement to liberate the Sikh homeland, Punjab, Khalistan, from Indian occupation. Khalistan declared its independence on October 7, 1987.
“On behalf of the 25 million strong Sikh Nation, I would like to extend my sympathies to Mrs. Bhutto?s husband and children, to the PPP, and to the people and government of Pakistan. Those who would undermine democracy and self-determination must be called to account,” Dr. Aulakh said. “We would also like to extend our sympathies to the families of those killed in the bombing attack,” Dr. Aulakh said.
“Pakistan is in shock,” Dr. Aulakh said. “We hope that the government of Pakistan can lead the country successfully through this crisis,” he said. “The best tribute to Benazir Bhutto would be to continue her policy of moving towards a democratic process and serving people,” he said.
“I appeal to all leaders, including President Musharraf, the leadership of the PPP, Nawaz Sharif, and all other leaders in Pakistan, to work to establish peace and stability so that Pakistan can continue on its road to democracy and progress,? Dr. Aulakh said.” Peace and stability are most needed right now. The situation must not be allowed to deteriorate into chaos,” he said.” Chaos and continued violence will never allow democracy to take root. We hope that with the grace of Allah, President Musharraf will maintain peace and progress in Pakistan during this very trying time.”
“Just as we seek freedom and democracy in our homeland of Khalistan, we seek the same freedom for all people around the world, and especially in our own neighborhood,” said Dr. Aulakh. “Instability does not serve anyone but the terrorists,” he said. “Let us join together for peace, freedom, and dignity for all the people of South Asia.”
